In several respects, this is a very strange album, though the music isn’t strange at all and is in fact quite typical vintage Jimmy Reed. First, despite what the title might lead you to believe, this is not a live recording; all 23 of the tracks were done in the studio. Not only that, they weren’t even performed at New York’s famed venue Carnegie Hall, although producer Calvin Carter would later claim they were; instead, everything was cut elsewhere.

Description:

Boasting a diverse and varied sound palette made up of synth pads, eclectic sample use, pulsating R&B-infused beats, and resonant vocal work, Mr. Jukes is the solo/collaborative project of Bombay Bicycle Club's Jack Steadman. With the band announcing they were going on indefinite hiatus in early 2016, it wasn't long before the Bombay Bicycle Club members began exploring their own avenues of creativity and songwriting, with Steadman announcing the creation of Mr. Jukes in 2017. Exploring his love of jazz, funk, and soul, the first taste of Steadman's project was the track "Angels/Your Love," a collaboration with neo-soul artist BJ the Chicago Kid. Describing the horns in the track's chorus as a representation of the "pure awe and excitement," that the singer/songwriter experienced when exploring different ideas for the project's debut release, he instantly knew that Mr. Jukes needed to be an all-around collaborative project as opposed to a purely solo project. Stating that the collaboration was the first for the project's debut effort, the single went on to become BBC Radio One's Hottest Record in the World. The following month, Mr. Jukes dropped his single "Tears," featuring Atlanta-based R&B singer Alexandria. His debut album, God First, arrived in July 2017 via Island Records and featured appearances from fellow British singer/songwriter Lianne La Havas, American funk/soul vocalist Charles Bradley, and American soul/gospel vocalist Lalah Hathaway. ~ Rob Wacey

This 1985 release from The Commodores earned the band its first Grammy Award for the title track, a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both died in 1984. The song became the first hit for The Commodores following the departure of Lionel Richie, propelling the album into the top 20.

„The Commodores made one final stab at regaining R&B glory when Lionel Richie and producer/arranger James Anthony Carmichael both left in the mid-’80s. J.D. Nicholas became their lead singer, and Dennis Lambert assumed production duties. They rebounded temporarily, when ‘Nightshift’ leaped out of an otherwise ordinary album to become a Grammy-winning R&B and pop smash. It stayed atop the R&B charts for a month, and peaked at #3 on the pop chart. Unfortunately, it was also the end for Thomas McClary, who left the group once the album had run its course. It was their next-to-last hit, and basically the end for the band, although they continued for a couple more years.“ –Ron Wynn

Yeah!!! (or Aretha Franklin In Person With Her Quartet) is the eighth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin, Released on May 17, 1965 by Columbia Records. Contrary to the overdubbed sounds of audience murmurs, the album was not a live album, but instead was recorded live at New York’s Columbia Studios and produced by Clyde Otis. This would be Franklin’s last collection of jazz recordings until the release of 1973’s Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky), released during her landmark tenure at Atlantic Records. An expanded version of the album that also contains the original session tracks without audience overdubs has been released on CD in the Columbia Box Set Take A Look: Aretha Franklin Complete On Columbia.
Aretha Louise Franklin (born March 25, 1942) is an American singer and musician. Franklin began her career singing gospel at her father, minister C. L. Franklin’s church as a child. In 1960, at age 18, Franklin embarked on a secular career, recording for Columbia Records only achieving modest success. Following her signing to Atlantic Records in 1967, Franklin achieved commercial acclaim and success with songs such as ‘Respect’, ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’ and ‘Think’. These hits and more helped her to gain the title The Queen of Soul by the end of the 1960s decade.

Unforgettable: A Tribute to Dinah Washington is the sixth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin. Released on February 18, 1964, by Columbia Records, The album is a tribute dedicated to the recently deceased singer Dinah Washington. The sessions were recorded in New York. A few tunes were cut with strings in order to bring out the essential ballad character of the songs (with the help of Bob Mersey’s arranging); most of the tracks, though, were made with the assistance of a small and sympathetic accompanying group for which Mersey supplied minimal written guidance.

Aretha Franklin is one of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged. The Queen in Waiting is Aretha Franklin’s 2002 compilation album featuring popular tracks “God Bless the Child”, “Skylark”, “Only the Lonely” and “Try a Little Tenderness”. The album includes Aretha’s last Columbia recordings produced by Bob Johnston, noted for his work during this period with Bob Dylan; and songs that Columbia “sweetened” with new musicians after Aretha left the label.

As phenomenally popular as Earth, Wind & Fire was from the mid-’70s to the early ’80s, it’s easy to forget that the band was hardly an overnight success. With Head to the Sky – EWF’s fourth album overall, second with Philip Bailey, and second for Columbia – Maurice White’s very spiritual and ambitious brand of soul and funk was starting to pay off commercially. The Latin-influenced “Evil” became the soulsters’ biggest hit up to that point, and material ranging from the hauntingly pretty title song (which boasts one of Bailey’s finest performances ever) to the jazz fusion gem “Zanzibar” is just as rewarding. The lineup White unveiled with Last Days and Time was working out beautifully; Bailey was clearly proving to be a major asset. Also worth noting is the presence of singer Jessica Cleaves, who left after this album and, several years later, resurfaced in George Clinton’s eccentric female group the Brides of Funkenstein. EWF still had what was basically a cult following, but that was beginning to change with Head to the Sky. And when EWF took off commercially in 1974 and 1975, many new converts went back and saw for themselves just how excellent an album Head to the Sky was.
