Title: Think Like The Waves
Genre: Jazz

Duration: 58:29

The young, Vancouver guitarist and oud player Gordon Grdina sought out Gary Peacock after a Keith Jarrett concert in San Francisco in 2000, and for the next five years Gary became his mentor and teacher. At their last meeting at Gary's house in upstate New York there was virtually no discussion, they just sessioned together for an hour or so, and the next day Gordon asked Gary if he would do a trio record. Gary agreed, and helped bring Paul Motian (another of Gordon's musical heroes) into the picture. Recorded in Brooklyn in January, Think Like the Waves is a remarkable international jazz debut, full of compelling original tunes by Grdina and deep interaction by the trio.

Gordon Beeferman – Four Parts Five (2015) [Jazz, Qobuz, FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit]

Artist: Gordon Beeferman
Title: Four Parts Five
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2015
Label: Innova Recordings
Duration: 30:30
Quality: FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz

Four Parts Five, by composer and pianist Gordon Beeferman, is a quintet tour de force that takes virtuosic rhythmic ensemble playing to a new level. It's a densely harmonious, frequently hair-raising, and deeply groovy piece of music: imagine Gyrgy Ligeti, Philip Glass, Igor Stravinsky, Steve Coleman and Conlon Nancarrow having a dance party -- with Morton Feldman and Count Basie watching wryly from the corner.
Performed by an ensemble consisting of Beeferman (on piano and Hammond B3 organ), Peter Hess (woodwinds), Anders Nilsson (electric guitar), James Ilgenfritz (bass), and Adam Gold (drums), the album's four pieces showcase tight, disciplined ensemble playing that spans the sparse, punctuated spaces of "1" and the spiraling, expansive curls of "4" with equal facility.

Description:

Jazz great James Morrison returns with an essential new album: timeless hits from The Great American Songbook, recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London with the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor Keith Lockhart.

Performing on a range of instruments (including trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, tenor sax and piano), Morrison brings his trademark virtuosity and flair to classics by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern and more. These tunes were originally made famous by many of the great singers of all time; for this album, Morrison especially commissioned arrangements that bring alive the melodies, styles and meanings that have made these songs so immortal and beloved.

These jazz 'standards' are close to Morrison's heart: "I proposed to my wife by walking into the bathroom playing My Funny Valentine, Every Time We Say Goodbye was played at the funeral of a dear friend, Summertime was the first time I worked with a singer, A Foggy Day was the first song I performed in public on the piano (aged 10), and of course Duke Ellington answered the unanswerable question 'what is jazz'? (It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing)."

James Morrison is regarded as one of the finest musicians of his generation, with a distinguished career featuring collaborations with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Charles, invitations to perform at the world's great venues and for multiple US presidents and Queen Elizabeth II, and pioneering education work. His collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra continues with a performance at the BBC Proms in August 2017.

Girls In Airports – Fables (2015) [Jazz, , FLAC 96kHz/24bit]

Artist: Girls In Airports
Title: Fables
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2015
Label: Edition Records
Duration: 38:05
Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit

Copenhagen group Girls in Airport is in fine form on Fables, its fourth release, and first on the Edition Records label. There are fewer big tunes than before although the band's trademark melodic hooks and rhythmic drive, its understated lyricism and hypnotic grooves are all present in abundance. What's been brought into sharper focus is the emotional currency in the writing and a narrative thread that seems to flow through these nine compositions. Significantly too, the percussive bite that Victor Dybbroe brought to Migration (Gateway Music, 2011) and Kaikoura (Gateway Music, 2013) contributes greatly to an intoxicating fusion of meditative lyricism and shamanistic funk.

Giacomo Gates – Everything is Cool (2015) [Jazz, HDTracks, FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit]

Artist: Giacomo Gates
Title: Everything is Cool
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2015
Label: Savant Recordse
Duration: 48:23
Quality: FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit

Giacomo Gates approaches jazz singing with a showman's poise and an aficionado's zeal. With his deep, cognac baritone and his vintage-hipster lexicon, his phrasing and his bearing, he upholds a distinctly masculine ideal of deceptively easy nonchalance. Gates is known as the modern day heir to Eddie Jefferson, the godfather of vocalese. Here he uses the style sparingly, but to great advantage, never showboating by using the challenging technique. Gates' considerable chops are always at the service of the song. Backed by his go-to pianist, John di Martino and guitarist Tony Lombardozzi leading the rhythm section and Grant Stewart out in front on saxophone, Giacomo sings and swings his way through a dozen tunes -- some familiar favorites, some rarely heard gems. He may be soft and subtle or he may be hip and humorous but one thing Giacomo Gates is not, is predictable.

Azure features beautiful duets by two great improvisers who proved their compatibility long ago. Bassist Gary Peacock and pianist Marilyn Crispell made some outstanding music together in Crispell's trio with late drummer Paul Motian, but their duo project also has an extensive history, until now unrecorded. With their shared sense of lyricism, their individual compositional styles and their profound background in free playing, Peacock and Crispell are exceptional musical partners. The album, self-produced in upstate New York, home territory for both musicians, contains pieces written by each one, duo improvisations and highly inventive piano and bass solos.

Description:

Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire is a forward-thinking musician with a bent toward atmospheric post-bop. Born in Oakland, California, Akinmusire showed early promise in his teens, and gigged professionally while also playing in the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble. Early encounters with such luminaries as saxophonists Joe Henderson and Steve Coleman pushed Akinmusire to focus a keen eye on his own development. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and later his Master's from the University of Southern California. Along the way, Akinmusire studied with such trumpet luminaries as master teacher Laurie Frink, Lew Soloff, and Terence Blanchard. Akinmusire has appeared as a sideman on many albums, including works by saxophonist Coleman, pianists Aaron Parks and Vijay Iyer, trombonist Josh Roseman, bassist Esperanza Spalding, and others. In 2007, Akinmusire won the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition and the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. A year later he released his debut solo album, Prelude to Cora, on Fresh Sound New Talent. In 2011 Akinmusire returned with his sophomore album, When the Heart Emerges Glistening, on Blue Note Records. He then made session appearances on records by a wide array of artists, including David Binney's Graylen Epicenter, Chris Dingman's Waking Dreams, Baptiste Trotignon's For a While, and Gerald Clayton's Life Forum. His sophomore Blue Note date, The Imagined Savior Is Easier to Paint, was released in March of 2014. The following year, he contributed to rapper Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and joined Marcus Miller on the bassist's Grammy-nominated Afrodeezia. In 2017, Akinmusire returned with the ambitious, two-disc concert album A Rift in Decorum: Live at the Village Vanguard. ~ Matt Collar
