Leslie Mendelson – Love & Murder (2017) [WEB FLAC]

Leslie Mendelson - Love & Murder (2017) [WEB FLAC] Download

Artist: Leslie Mendelson
Album: Love & Murder
Genre: Folk
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 206 mb
Source: Digital Download
Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Leslie Mendelson returns with Love & Murder the singer/songwriter's first new album in eight years. A stirring work instilled with emotional depth and poise, the effort is the long-awaited follow up to her Grammy Award-nominated debut, Swan Feathers. It is an apropos title, reflecting the dichotomy between the dark and light she encountered in those years between. Poised for stardom in 2009 with comparisons to Carole King and Rickie Lee Jones on the tip of tastemakers lips, fate as it often does, had other plans. Perhaps though this was to the benefit of her art. After losing a record and management deal and having her friend and producer Joel Dorn unexpectedly pass away, Mendelson recommitted to herself and slowly but surely penned the songs with her longtime co-writer Steve McEwan that would become Love & Murder. Produced by Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams), it's a sparse, raw collection of ten folk songs. Opening with Jericho, a haunting number that sets the tone for what is to come, it makes clear that Love & Murder lies more within darker spaces that artists like Sharon Van Etten, Lana Del Rey and Dusty Springfield inhabit. Songs like Murder Me, Coney Island, and Chasing the Thrill find Leslie exploring loss in ways that feel personal and metaphorical, where the stories within are multifaceted. She also recorded three covers for the album: the classic-country infused Cry, Cry Darlin, a take on Bob Dylan's classic Just Like a Woman, played on the ukulele, and a duet with The Grateful Deads Bob Weir on Roy Orbison s Blue Bayou. In fact, Mendelson was unwittingly adopted by the West Coast jam scene after Weir heard her take on Friend of the Devil and recruited her to perform with him. On Love & Murder, however, Leslie offers a different side that isn't been present in her early work or recent collaborations. This collection is just about the songs and my voice, she says. That's what people can connect with. It shows where I am right now as an artist and where I want to go.

Travis Linville – Up Ahead (2017) [WEB FLAC]

Travis Linville - Up Ahead (2017) [WEB FLAC] Download

Artist: Travis Linville
Album: Up Ahead
Genre: Folk
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 236 mb
Source: Digital Download
Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

Travis Linville is another artist in an ever expanding line of hugely talented 'Okie' (natives of Oklahoma) musicians whose talents are crying out to be heard by a very much wider audience. This is his fourth full length studio album, with one e.p and a live album also to his name in a highly diverse twenty plus year career that sees him, certainly in recent times, working as a sideman to the also hugely talented Hayes Carll. Travis was also a member of the Burtschi Brothers, a band whose music quite literally knew no boundaries so it is no real surprise that this excellent new recording also covers a broad canvas albeit within the wide boundaries of 'roots music,' but always underpinned, in varying degrees, by country music.
He is the possessor of a warm, mellow vocal style and is an incredibly talented songwriter who also shows tremendous ability in being able to come up with some peerless arrangements that the listener just knows couldn't be bettered. Each song has a musical atmosphere that is perfectly sympathetic to the lyrics on an album that is somewhere in the middle ground between the mainstream and boundary hugging country music.
For this recording Travis enlisted the help of some great session musicians who have also worked live with him to ensure every song has exactly what is needed, with no histrionics, just beautiful playing. He had David Leach on upright bass, Ryan Jones played keyboards and there were two outstanding percussionists in the form of Matt Duckworth and Mike Meadows with Travis Linville himself taking all vocals, lap and pedal steel guitars, guitars, mandolin and dobro. It is probably pointless saying he is a highly skilled multi instrumentalist, but he most certainly is!
Some slow but chunky chugging guitars, bass and percussion get things going on Flowers in your hair with Travis's warm vocal soon joined by piano and some nice harmonies on a lovely country love song that includes steel guitar and mandolin. That metronomic chugging style is mirrored on Finding my way, with bass, melodic twangy guitar and steel guitar supplying just the right support for Travis's warm vocal. The song is a just below mid tempo ballad that includes some nice restrained harmonies on a beautifully arranged composition that eventually has the addition of keyboards on another tale that has a strong country feel. Bar room is a slower song, again with the deep twang and steel guitar to the fore with the usual solid percussion and throbbing bass. Travis provides yet another excellent vocal with some sympathetic harmonies on a classic song about the drowning of sorrows, with a nice piano break adding to the atmosphere. Finally, Going down easy is an easy going, shuffling late night jazzy ballad with an excellent guitar and keyboard sound aided by some tremendous percussion and bass and further highlighted by an excellent vocal from Travis that shows his versatility. It is a little unusual in the context of the album but a quite addictive song that perfectly suits his manipulative character laden vocal style.
'Up ahead' is an album built on excellent songs, very few of which reach more than a sedate mid tempo and yet the recording loses nothing for this thanks to Travis's lovely warm vocal style, beautiful arrangements, outstanding melodies and tremendous playing. That, in a nutshell, sums up this album that is driven by Travis's own natural style that includes a large helping of 'country' without him actually being driven by an adherence to it's often narrow confines! An excellent album by a talented, highly individual singer, songwriter, who should be defined by his all round talents rather than just those two rather limiting words!

Album: Shake Me Now
Genre: Folk
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 260 mb
Source: Digital Download
Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

2017 release. Shake Me Now is stripped-down, yet dense. There are musical and lyrical traces of the blues, bluegrass, folk, rock, soul, and classical music. Their songwriting stands out on the title track, "Shake Me Now" as well as the upbeat and hopeful "One My Way Tonight". In addition to their original songs, there are reinterpreted versions of the traditional blues number "Deep Ellum Blues", the traditional folk tune "Worried Man Blues", and Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere". One gets the feeling of being on a widescreen road trip through America's past and present, with multiple eras and traditions folding in upon each other. The result sounds familiar and road-worn, yet completely new a quality that Quiles & Cloud share with some of American music's greatest innovators.

Pieta Brown – Postcards (2017) [WEB FLAC]

Pieta Brown - Postcards (2017) [WEB FLAC] Download

Artist: Pieta Brown
Album: Postcards
Genre: Folk
Year: 2017
Size: ~ 241 mb
Source: Digital Download
Quality: lossless
Sample Rate: 44.1 kHz / 16 Bit

Description:

It was in hotel rooms across the country that Pieta Brown wrote most of the songs on her gorgeous new album, Postcards. Like any touring musician, she was on the road to survive, balancing the rewards of performing music for a living with the challenges of trying to stay connected to loved ones and other artists while in motion. So, when she was finally stationed at home, she decided to send out some postcards. These weren't just any postcards, though, these were musical postcards, the stripped-down, acoustic shells of new songs she'd written while traveling, and she sent them to folks like Mark Knopfler, Calexico, Mason Jennings, David Lindley, Carrie Rodriguez, Caitlin Canty, and The Pines among others. Her instructions to each were simple: write back.
"These Postcards are about connecting and openness," explains Pieta. "But, one of the sparks for this project was talking to so many musicians who are dealing with the way the music business has been shape-shifting lately. From people with very successful careers to more underground indie artists just trying to pay the bills, everyone seems to be dealing with this sense of 'How do we do this?' and looking for their own answers. I was hoping through experimenting with musical collaborations to keep the conversation going."
What Pieta created is more than a conversation, though. It's a striking collection of portraits - sometimes sweet and tender, sometimes eerie and haunting - of characters facing loneliness and longing and loss with a stoic sense of dignity. Her airy vocals, with just a hint of a drawl from a childhood split between Alabama and Iowa, float above rich, earthy texture, fluidly merging grit and grace in what is undoubtedly her finest work to date.
Hailed as a "self-styled poetess, folk goddess and country waif" by the BBC, Pieta Brown first came to international attention with her 2002 self-titled debut. Pieta has since been recognized by NPR for her "moody, ethereal" songwriting, applauded by The Boston Globe for her "mercurial voice" and has continued to gain widespread critical attention for both her singing and songwriting with each release. Wall Street Journal, American Songwriter, and Amazon have all included her albums in year-end, best-of picks. And along the way she has shared stages with everyone from Emmylou Harris and JJ Cale to Neko Case and Richard Thompson, in addition to performing at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Mountain Jam. But maybe even more importantly, to a fiercely independent artist like Pieta, she has received praise and support from many of her fellow artists and mentors - Justin Vernon, Iris Dement, Mark Knopfler, Amos Lee, producer Don Was, and filmmaker Wim Wenders to name a few.
Postcards follows 2014's Paradise Outlaw, which was recorded at Bon Iver's April Base studio with help from Justin Vernon (who recently described Paradise Outlaw as "probably my favorite record ever made at our studio"), Amos Lee, and Pieta's father, Grammy-nominated folk-singer, Greg Brown. But where Paradise Outlaw celebrated the sound of a group of a musicians recording live in a room together, Postcards explores the role of distance and isolation in collaboration. Pieta recorded the basic guitar and vocals for the album, some with frequent collaborator Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Charlie Parr) in the mix, at a small garage studio near her home before mailing out each track to friends to complete and send back.
"Collaborating with other musicians and elevating a song beyond its outlines has become one of my favorite things about making music," says Pieta. "I'm interested in what other people can bring to a song, especially musicians I admire. Music is very magnetic. And I have been so drawn to and inspired by all the collaborators inside these Postcards."
